Barbara Burgess Maier: “Conversions”
My work is the conversion of my energy from and for living. I collect, absorb, remember, reflect, and translate experience with marks and materials reserved or dispersed in gentle… or explosive ways. The creative process becomes a search for meaning… a time when I can feel in tune and fully alive and when disparate visual elements seek to connect in unexpected ways that can surprise, disorient, reassure, and excite.
If one were to ask… “What do you hold in your heart and mind as you work?” I would say… As much as I can. My rage, my joy… the light, the dark… the silence, the clamor. I seek to focus the energies of each into each motion of my hand as it meets the surface, or hovers above waiting for that certain moment of alignment. Ideas rush in waves that ebb and flow, ripple and crash, push and pull with perpetual possibility.
These mixed media paintings and prints are my purest way of translating my experience, my humanness in ways that invite the viewer to connect in their own way and at their own pace. Marks and shapes collide, light reveals color, and meaning shifts as quickly as insight reveals and as slowly as thoughtful reflection requires.
Nina Wishnok: “Things Are Getting Dark”
Working with collected imagery and layering over earlier work with woodblock, drawing, ink, and copier toner, these prints celebrate the humor and weirdness in the murky and off-kilter.
